Mother's Song
Sarah Rose Catherine Broeder passed away one month ago today. It is still to unbelievable to us. This is a poem I post today in memory of her. Thanks to the Hirshouers for sharing it with us.
Mother's Song
I've lost my baby daughter,
Though not misplaced.
I feel she's somewhere
Bound by neither time nor space.
Perhaps she sits before the Throne
With radiant…

In August 2001, my vacation time finally came around. We were planning a trip to Knoebels Amusement Park in the Poconos and trip to an underground cavern near Pittsburgh and possibly a trip to the Statue of Liberty. I can’t explain why I felt uneasy about the trip within…

The power of sharing
Today I was able to tell my storie to someone new and it felt really powerfull. Both My dad and brothers deaths were big news stories in the town that I am from because of the ways that they died. So almost everyone already knew before I had an opportunity to talk about it. In a way it was beneficial because I had a lot of people who were really supportive of what I went through. But at the same time that ment that there were very few people that I was able to tell. This summer I am staying…

Tim and I left the Empire State Building and began to walk around Mid-Town Manhattan. Near by was a comic book store and we were attracted to the display of comic book hero porcelain bisque busts, toys, t-shirts and stand-up cut out displays of Spider-Man, Boba Fett, Han Solo and…

A few days after Tim’s birthday, in July 2010, I took him to the Empire State Building. I told how it was something I hadn’t done and I knew he would enjoy. We started out late in the morning of July 28th. I wanted to be up earlier, but both of us overslept. We headed up I-95 to the New…

Loving Someone Under a Black Cloud
A friend’s wife died suddenly a week ago. She was just a few years older than me and, as far as I knew, she wasn’t sick. When I called him to find out what happened, I was stunned to learn that she had an addiction, one that took its toll last weekend. He said it was something she had battled for a long time, and obviously he battled right alongside her.
This couple had an amazing love for each other, yet outwardly there was no sign of the struggle they endured…

Laughter in the Face of Tears
The above title may seem inappropriate to some. “Death is not funny,” you might think. The idea of laughing at a time of loss seems antithetical to the emotional upheaval that you may be feeling. Yet a recent collaborative study that investigated the relationship between laughter and grief found that it is perfectly understandable to laugh at a time when you least feel like…
